END-OF-SUMMER EVENT FOR COOL GIRLS:
Cool Girls raised funds for full and partial scholarships so that no girl was excluded from this exploration of Left Hand Canyon. Funding came from Cool Girls families, the National Girls Collaborative Project, The Noyce Foundation, and individual donors.
Many of the dozen girls had never been camping. They pitched their teepee-like tent and gathered firewood in preparation for roughing it in the canyon, rain and shine. They learned about science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) as they relate to our home on the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. They had fun bonding with each other through activities and games and enhanced their self-confidence. They learned about the plants, animals and geology of the area and discussed what they can do to help preserve the environment.
The private nature preserve featured a lovely meadow, a creek and a forest, as well as hiking trails. After setting up camp, the girls sang and played tricks on each other. They explored STEM through observation, discussion, and journaling in their science and art notebooks. They drew birds and other creatures and watched open-pit goldmining take place. They all survived the cold, rainy night to appreciate hot chocolate in the morning.
